The Garda Commissioner has said the independent, trusted and fair nature of the police service has been captured in the publication of a book chronicling the history of the force.

Drew Harris was speaking at the launch in Finglas Garda station of The Guardians - 100 Years of An Garda Síochána, which was compiled by Garda Stephen Moore along with the input of a number historians and academics and the editorial direction of the former Assistant Commissioner John Twomey.

It is described as a unique collection of personal stories from retired and serving gardaí and contains some of the 17,000 images from the garda photographic archive.

The book looks at some of the key moments in the history of the force including the admission of women and the establishment of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

The Garda Commissioner paid tribute to the publication describing it as a "very important contribution" to the centenary of An Garda Síochána, which he said involved hours of voluntary effort from those involved.
