A 43-year-old woman has been charged with 14 counts of making false statements and reports against nine people.

Sonya Egan, of The Lawn, Lios Cara, Kileens, Co Cork, appeared before Cork District Court this afternoon where evidence of her arrest, charge and caution earlier today was given in court.

Detective Sergeant James Buckley, of Anglesea Street Garda Station said Ms Egan made no reply when charged at 11.10am with making nine false statements and five false reports contrary to Section 12(a) of the Criminal Law Act (1976) at locations in Cork and Dublin against three women and six men between 2016 and 2020.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis told Judge Treasa Kelly that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that Ms Egan go forward for prosecution on indictment to the Circuit Criminal Court.

The court was told that the State had no objection to bail.

Judge Kelly granted an application for bail.

Ms Egan is to appear again before the District Court for service of the Book of Evidence on 14 September.

Bail was subject to five conditions including that Ms Egan does not make any direct or indirect contact with any of the injured parties on social media or by email, or any of the investigation team.

An application for free legal aid was also granted.
