The Government has agreed to nominate David Barniville as the new President of the High Court, one of Ireland's most senior judicial positions.

Mr Justice Barniville was most recently on the Court of Appeal following his appointment to the High Court in December 2017.

A non-statutory Advisory Committee was established by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to assess expressions of interest from applicants and make recommendations to the minister.

The committee was made up of Chief Justice Donal O'Donnell, President of the Court of Appeal George Birmingham, and a lay member.

Mr Justice Barniville replaces Ms Justice Mary Irvine, who is retiring in July.

Ms Justice Irvine was the first female President of the High Court and was appointed by the Government to the role in June 2020.
