The bodies of an elderly man and woman have been removed from a house in rural south Tipperary where they were found on Monday afternoon.
The remains of the two people may have gone undiscovered in the home for more than a year.
The couple have been named locally as Hillary and Nicholas Smith. They were originally from England and lived in Ireland for many years, including the last eight at the house which is 4km outside Cloneen. It is understood they had no children.
Gardaí investigating the deaths are awaiting toxicology reports as they try to establish causes of death.
It is understood post-mortem examinations concluded yesterday evening have been inconclusive, pending the results of further tests which will take days or longer to be completed.
The post-mortem examinations were carried out at University Hospital Waterford by Chief State pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan.
The remains of the couple were found by gardaí after concerns were raised by neighbours about their whereabouts.
Confirmation of their identities may take some time and could depend on DNA sampling and dental records.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau have been carrying out a forensic examination.
Gardaí said their investigation is at a very early stage.
