A file is to be prepared for the coroner's court following the death of a boy who got into difficulty in a Co Offaly hotel swimming pool on Sunday.
Investigations have been launched by gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority after it was confirmed that the six-year-old died at Children's Health Ireland in Crumlin on Tuesday.
He had initially been brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore after he got into difficulty in the pool at the Tullamore Court Hotel on Sunday evening, and was then transferred to the hospital in Dublin.
It is understood the boy was with family members on a break from their home in Dublin at the hotel at the weekend and was attending a regular swimming session with his family when the incident happened.
He is survived by his parents and two brothers.
Emergency services responded quickly to the incident but hotel management said in a statement that it was "with great sadness we have been informed that the child passed away on Tuesday 31 May.
"We offer our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones at this difficult time. The thoughts of all our team are with them. We would ask everyone to please respect their privacy".
The four-star Tullamore Court Hotel is located on O'Moore Street in the town and was bought by the iNua Hospitality group in 2019, from John Flanagan Developments.
Gardaí are treating the death as a tragic accident and said that a file will be prepared for the coroner's court.
An inquest into the boy's death will be held at a later date.
The Health and Safety Authority said that they are aware of the incident and inquiries are ongoing into what occurred.
Chairman of the Tullamore municipal district at Offaly County Council, Tony McCormack, said people are shocked by what happened.
"Your heart goes out to the family and friends of that young boy," he said.
"It's an horrific tragedy to happen anywhere. I'm sure the hotel will be trying to do everything they can for the family, and look after them.
"It's just an awful time, you wouldn't wish it on anyone."
