A warning about the high risk of forest fire has been extended by the Department of Agriculture.

The orange alert, which was issued last Thursday, was due to expire at midday today.

However the department has said that due to weather patterns and the expected level of risk, the warning has now been extended until 12pm on Friday, 1 April. This is dependent on "significant rainfall", the Department of Agriculture said.

It said that "significant fire activity" has been seen in recent days.

The department said that "a high fire risk is deemed to exist in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist".

Good weather is set to continue for the rest of the week, however temperatures will turn a bit cooler from Wednesday with showers at times as well.

The Department of Agriculture has advised people not to cause or light fires in and around forests open land. People are also advised to dispose of smoking materials responsibly and not to attempt to fight fires.

To report a fire, members of the public are advised to call 999 or 112.
