President Higgins calls for unity over Ukraine in St Patrick's Day message

President Michael D Higgins has issued a St Patrick's Day message calling for solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

President Higgins said that a dark shadow was "cast across our world as we witness the unfolding events in Ukraine.

"I know that the hearts of Irish people and Irish communities across the world go out to all of those who are suffering from this completely unacceptable, immoral and unjustified, invasion and violence to their lives."

In his St Patrick's Day message, the President said that people must urgently "unite our voices in demanding an immediate ceasefire, respect for humanitarian law, and the withdrawal of Russian troops."

He also referenced the Cvid-19 pandemic in his message, saying that it is hoped that "we are beginning to emerge from the dark shadow" of it.
