Govt working on plans for significant influx of Ukrainian refugees

The Government is working on plans for a significant influx of Ukrainian refugees.

It is expected those arriving with be granted similar residency and work privileges as EU citizens.

Meanwhile, families across the country have been offering to provide accommodation to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Gabrielle Seacy from Dublin is hoping to welcome Vasilisa Mazurchuk and her 3-year-old daughter from Ukraine to her home in the coming days.

They have been in hiding in Lviv and are preparing to make the difficult journey to Ireland

Gabrielle said: "What we are hoping to offer them is you know a home, security, safety, give them a head start, make them feel welcome..."

The Government has said it is making plans to accommodate up to 20,000 refugees here in Ireland.

They will get special refugee status and they be entitled to work and live in Ireland as EU citizens.

Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O'Gorman said further information on the numbers of refugees coming to Ireland will be known in the coming days.

He said: "Of course initially when people arrive there will be a need for immediate housing, we are examining this at the moment"

I think hotels and the commissioning of hotels to provide this will probably be an option that will be used in the first instance...

"There may in the future be an ask of Irish families."

Liliia Skrypka, who is a nurse from Ukraine, is on her way to Ireland from Poland with her son.

They left behind her husband and relatives in Ukraine, which she says was extremely difficult.

She said: "My son so much afraid to die and a few days ago he said to be momma I don't want to die because I only have years old..."

She is hoping to be able to work in the health service when she arrives in Ireland.

"I can help for people in Ireland for people, I can work as a nurses."

Meanwhile, after a long and difficult journey from Ukraine to Ireland, Gabrielle says she will be waiting with open arms for Vasilisa and her daughter when they get here.

"We have been preparing the room there today for them.

"We are expecting them to come in over the next day or two and basically we are going to look after them, host them and make them feel part of the family."
