Four Irish babies born to surrogate mothers in Kyiv have been discharged from a maternity hospital in the Ukrainian capital and are being brought by road to the border.

RTÉ News understands that the parents of the infants, three Irish couples, are also in transit, where they hope to be united with their babies in a neighbouring country.

The infants, including a set of twins, are being cared for by nurses as they make the journey, which is expected to take at least 23 hours.

Last month, a number of Irish families returned from Ukraine with their babies who were born via surrogacy there.

A number of other babies are due to be born to Irish couples in the coming months via surrogacy in Ukraine.
