A motorcyclist travelling at 182km/h in a 50km/h zone in Clara, Co Offaly, was among more than 1,600 motorists detected speeding during a 24-hour, national 'Slow Down' day, according to gardaí.
The operation, which ended at 7am, saw high visibility speed enforcement in 1,322 speed enforcement zones.
Chief Superintendent Michael Hennebry, of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, said there is still a minority of drivers "who choose to ignore the legal speed limits and public warnings".
Among those detected travelling above the speed limit included a driver travelling at 152km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M7 at Mooretown in Kildare; another at 130km/h in a 100km/h on the M50 at Tymon North in Dublin; one at 119km/h in a 80km/h zone on the N4 Doddsborough, Lucan in Dublin.
The aim of 'Slow Down' day is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, which is a major contributory factory in road crashes.
A report from the Road Safety Authority found that between 2008 and 2012, excessive speed was a factor in almost one third of all fatal collisions.
Gardaí and GoSafe detected at total of 1,675 motorists driving in excess of the applicable speed limits from 7am yesterday until 7am this morning.
