There was an increase in the latest homeless figures, with a total of 9,150 men, women and children in emergency accommodation in January.

That is an increase of 236 on December and a jump of 837, or 10% year-on-year.

The monthly figures had been increasing since last May with the only decrease occurring in December - a month which traditionally sees a drop in homelessness.

The number of single adults was 4,788 in January which is the highest number ever recorded.

The number of children was 2,563 which is an increase of 112 in a month and up 237 on last year's figures.

The largest total number recorded was 10,514 in October 2019 - the latest figures are 13% lower than this.

Dublin has 70% of the total number of people in homeless accommodation.
