A 22-year-old rally driver has died following a crash at an event in Co Kerry yesterday.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at around 3pm during the Killarney Forestry Rally at Mount Eagle in Castleisland.

Eoin McCarthy, from Dunmanway in Co Cork, was seriously injured and airlifted to Cork University Hospital, where he died last night.

A man in his 30s, who was also in the car, was taken to CUH with non-life threatening injuries.

In a statement, Killarney and District Motor Club said the crash occurred on SS4 of the rally.

The club extended its sympathies to Mr McCarthy's family and friends.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene and gardaí said they were engaging with the relevant agencies in relation to the incident.

Local councillor Bobby O'Connell said the incident left the community in shock.

"The rally brought such a buzz to the town, even though the weather was bad. There was great community spirit," he said.

"It’s a very sad day for the area."

In a statement Motorsport Ireland said it was "deeply saddened" by Mr McCarthy's death.

"As the governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in Ireland, Motorsport Ireland together with the event organisers and the relevant authorities, has begun a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

"The thoughts of everyone at Motorsport Ireland and within the wider motorsport community continue to be with Eoin McCarthy’s family and friends, his co-driver, the organisers of the event, and other members of the motorsport community who were present at the scene."
