The Tánaiste has said his legal representatives did not get "a definitive answer" when they contacted gardaí to ask when an investigation into him would be completed.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the disclosure of a confidential Government document to a friend of Leo Varadkar's in 2019.

Mr Varadkar had told the Dáil he gave a copy of an agreement between the State and the Irish Medical Organisation to Maitiú Ó Túathail, the then president of a rival GP organisation, the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP) in April that year.

The investigation is focused on potential breaches of existing legislation, such as the Official Secrets Act or the Criminal Justice Acts.

In November 2020, Mr Varadkar apologised in the Dáil for "errors of judgement" and said that giving the GP contract to the president of the NAGP by informal communication was not good practice.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, Mr Varadkar said he understands that the investigation is nearing a conclusion.

However, he said he has "heard that before" so does not know if that is going to be the case.

The Tánaiste said he cannot interfere with the investigation in any way and there is nothing he can do to force the pace of it.

"So I just hope that it will be concluded soon", he said, adding that he wants to reiterate that the allegations that have been made against him are false.

He said the suggestion that he has done anything criminal, corrupt "or even self interested" is "totally wrong".
