UCD Veterinary School has made an urgent appeal for dog blood donations after exhausting existing stocks in recent weeks.

Professor Carmel Mooney from UCD said that several animals required blood transfusions this week, resulting in the call for donations.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, she said there are many reasons a dog would require a blood transfusion including for surgery following a trauma or road accident or when other diseases develop.

Prof Mooney urged anyone with a suitable dog to contact UCD's veterinary school.

Donations ideally are from dogs used to the procedure, who are aged between one and eight years, weigh over 25 kilos and are in full health.

UCD is specifically looking for dogs in Dublin, but said anyone outside of the capital with a suitable dog donor could contact their local vet, who also need supplies.
