President Michael D Higgins celebrates his 80th birthday today.

Mr Higgins, who was born in Limerick on 18 April 1941, was first elected president in 2011 and won a second term in 2018.

He was first elected to the Dáil as a Labour Party TD in 1981.

He served in the Dáil for 24 consecutive years between 1987 and 2011.

Mr Higgins married his wife Sabina in 1974 and they have four children.

President Higgins was full of praise for his wife when he was interviewed at Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday night's Late Late Show.

TG4 is broadcasting a special programme tonight to celebrate President Higgins’ birthday.

The hour-long programme of music, song, dance and poems begins at 9.30pm.

It will include Van Morrison, former president Mary Robinson, and many artists and musicians.
