Two food outlets were closed last month due to breaches of food safety regulations.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said the Soma restaurant and café on Tuckey Street in Cork was closed due to a grave and immediate danger to public health.

It said rodent droppings were found in the service area of the restaurant and in a store room, where both food and non-food items were kept.

The FSAI also ordered the closure of the Twisted Dough Wicklow, a food stall trading at The Crescent in Boyle, Co Roscommon.

Concerns over cross-contamination were raised after an inspection found that raw chicken was being prepared on a folding table beside the coffee machine at a food stall.

It also said there was no running hot and cold water for the washing and disinfection of equipment.

Two Prohibition Orders were also served last month against Bally Bia, with an address at Ballydehob Community Hall, Ballydehob, in Co Cork, and Irish Gold Venison Limited at Ballinwillin House, Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

FSAI Chief Executive Dr Pamela Byrne said the orders "highlight the need for all food businesses to meet their legal requirements of high standards of food safety, hygiene and pest control to prevent food contamination and protect consumer health".
