An Irish man has died after becoming ill while mountain climbing in Kenya.

The Kenyan Wildlife Service said the 40-year-old man "developed some breathing problems" at a stopover hut while climbing Mount Kenya.

The incident, which occurred at around 6am yesterday, was reported to a search and rescue team which evacuated him to Mackinder's Camp.

He was then airlifted to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man accessed Mount Kenya National Park through Naro Moru Gate on 25 January.

The Kenyan Wildlife Service offered its sincere condolences to the family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.
