UK police have said that they no longer consider an Irish man to be a person of interest in the Essex container tragedy case.

Essex Police, who had issued a public appeal for information on the whereabouts of Christopher Hughes in October 2019, have said no further action will be taken against him in relation to the manslaughter of 39 people or people trafficking.

A spokesperson for the force said Mr Hughes was initially identified as a suspect in the case based on information and evidence.

The spokesperson added: "He was later the subject of a voluntary interview within the Republic of Ireland and that was intentionally because of legal difficulties in speaking to him elsewhere."

The spokesperson said "no further action will be taken against him".
