An Post says despite high demand Christmas post is "in good shape" though there may be delays on delivering last-minute shopping and gifts in and out of Europe as a result of delays on the UK landbridge.

Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, An Post's Head of Communications Anna McHugh said that many people posted early and abided by online shopping deadlines so "everything we had on time will be delivered".

She said that weather remains a big concern but that overall "we are in good shape" with the main focus on domestic posting of parcels and cards in the coming days.

Ms McHugh said that this is the year when a personal letter or card is needed.

An Post will be delivering right up to Christmas Eve and post offices will reopen again from 30 December.

Two weeks ago An Post announced delays of up to a week had forced it to bring forward the latest dates for posting in advance of Christmas for e-commerce retailers.

It said that delivery by Christmas Day could not be guaranteed for parcels posted by retailers after Monday 14 December.

The move came as the company's capacity to process parcels comes under severe pressure due a large increase in demand.

An Post has seen a 230% increase in parcel deliveries.

During November, the company delivered 2.5 million parcels every week, it expected that to increase to 3.5m in the weeks coming up to Christmas.
