Focus Ireland has appealed for donations to help support the over 1,000 homeless families that will be living in emergency accommodation this Christmas.

The charity has built a mock-up hotel room in their shop on South William Street in Dublin, to, it says, show what life is like for the hundreds of families who will be sharing a hotel room this festive period.

The space is designed, the charity says, as a typical 12x12 foot hotel room and is in public view.

Niamh Lambe, project manager with Focus Ireland, says this Christmas will be particularly difficult for homeless families.

"Prepping for Christmas has been quite difficult for families this year, but it's even more compounded for homeless families. How Santa might find them, how will they get their Christmas meal?"

The charity normally holds a party for families in Croke Park, but this year it is cancelled.

Latest figures from the Department of Housing show there are 1,117 families without a home and living in emergency accommodation such as hotels, or family hubs.
