The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is back rehearsing in its home of Studio 1 in the RTÉ Radio Centre for the first time since Covid-19 restrictions were introduced in March.

Strict social distancing and hygiene measures have been in place to allow the musicians to play together in a safe way.

Thirteen are taking part in the rehearsals today, significantly down on the full cohort of 45.

A spokesperson said getting the full orchestra to rehearse in the space at the moment is not possible.

As part of the measures put in the place, music stands will be disinfected, rehearsals will be shorter with longer breaks to allow for cleaning, and there will be a clear pathway for the musicians to follow into the studio.

There will also be masks for those who can wear them and perspex screens.

While the rehearsals are back to today, there is still no sign of the full orchestra returning to play in front of a live audience.

However, the orchestra has taken part in RTÉ's Shine - an hour of music and words - which will air this weekend.
