Man killed in road crash on M1 near Dundalk

A man has been killed in a collision between a car and a lorry on the M1 in Co Louth.

The incident happened southbound between Junction 17 and Junction 16 near Dundalk at around 5am.

The driver of the car, who was in his 30s, died at the scene.

The lorry driver, who is in his early 40s, was uninjured.

He was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at Dundalk Garda Station.

A section of the motorway is closed with local diversions in place.

Separately, an 18-year-old man has died and six others have been injured following a two-car collision in Co Down.

The teenager who died had been a passenger in a Peugeot 207 that collided with a Volkswagen Polo on the Coily Hill Road in Killyleagh shortly after midnight.

Six other young people, four males and two females, were injured and taken to hospital.

The PSNI has issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the crash to contact them.
