Gardaí gather in silent tribute to fallen colleague

Gardaí around the country gathered together to remember their colleague Detective Garda Colm Horkan who was killed in the line of duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, on Wednesday.

His State Funeral took place in his hometown of Charlestown, Co Mayo today.

In his homily, Parish Priest Tommy Johnston described Det Gda Horkan as one of nature's gentlemen.

In Dundalk, Co Louth, gardaí stood in silence at midday to remember Det Gda Horkan.

Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan said they knew well "the pain and feelings of loss that our colleagues in Roscommon and Mayo are experiencing today", as the deaths of gardaí Adrian Donohoe and Tony Golden were recalled.

He said: "Unfortunately we are all too familiar of the dangers that we as members of An Garda Síochána face every time we take up duty in order to protect and serve.

"The tributes paid to Colm Horkan over the past few days, reflect the feelings of the country and the strong bond between An Garda Síochána and the community we are proud to serve."

Among those who stood in front of the tricolour, which was at half mast, were many retired gardaí, including Pat McGee who was chief superintendent at the time of the deaths of both Detective Garda Donohoe in 2013 and Garda Golden in 2015.

Hundreds of gardaí along with members of the fire service, paramedics, the Defence Forces, representatives of the GAA, along with retired gardaí, and members of the community gathered at Limerick's Henry Street Garda Station to observe a minute's silence in memory of Det Gda Horkan.

A short prayer service was followed with a community wide salute.

Retired Garda Ben O'Sullivan, who was seriously injured in a shooting in Adare in June 1996, attended the ceremony, along with Ann McCabe, the widow of his colleague Garda Jerry McCabe who died in that attack.

Former acting Garda Commissioner Dónall Ó Cualáin was also in attendance.

Over 100 gardaí gathered at Kilkenny Garda Station to pay tribute to Det Garda Horkan.

Superintendent Derek Hughes said the death of Garda Horkan had deeply affected all in the force, including those who knew him since Garda College in Templemore.

A short prayer service was led by representatives of the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland and Islam faiths.

The ceremony was also attended by many members of the public as well as members of other emergency services and voluntary agencies.

Earlier, a book of condolence at City Hall in Kilkenny was signed by Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Andrew McGuinness, Mayor of the city municipal area John Coonan, and chairman of the Joint Policing Committee Pat Fitzpatrick.
