Dublin City Council has appealed to everyone not to drop used latex gloves and masks on the ground and to dispose of them safely.
They say parts of the city have seen an increase in the amount of these being littered by people during the Covid-19 crisis.
Lord Mayor of Dublin, Tom Brabazon, says people need to be mindful about how they dispose of used latex gloves and masks as they could contain the virus.
He said it's critical to do whatever we can to stop the spread of the virus and thereby save lives. He said this includes being responsible for the safe disposal of face masks and gloves.
Litter Prevention Officer with Dublin City Council Bernie Lillis says the Council is under added pressure during the pandemic to deliver many services as possible and is seeking the help of the public to do this.
Irish Business Against Litter said the discarding of facemasks and gloves poses an unnecessary risk to local authority staff and others.
Conor Horgan of IBAL says that with local authority resources stretched, civic responsibility is called for now more than ever.
He said this includes the proper disposal of waste, not least waste that is prone to contamination.
