Washington Street in Cork, one of the main thoroughfares in the city, has been closed to traffic following the partial collapse of a building early today.
It happened just before 2am between the junctions of Cross Street and South Main Street.
Nobody was injured in the incident. There are fears that the rest of the building may collapse.
There are also fears in relation to a scaffolding 'cage' that had been erected at the front of the building to facilitate renovations.
Gardaí and several units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene and remained there overnight.
Washington Street is also one of the main arteries for motorists and public transport in the city.
Engineers from Cork City Council are to inspect the building.
Crews from Anglesea Street, Ballyvolane and a Third Officer are currently in attendance at a partial building collapse on Washington Street in the City Centre.
