A man arrested on Thursday morning continues to be held in custody at Kilkenny Garda station in relation to an alleged fatal assault at the house on High Hayes Terrace, on the city's Castlecomer Road.

His period of detention has been extended and he can be questioned until early on Saturday morning.

The man who died following a suspected fatal assault on has been named locally as 46-year-old Liam Edward O'Sullivan.

Mr O’Sullivan died as a result of a head injury.

A post-mortem has been completed on the body of the man, who was not originally from Kilkenny City but lived on High Hayes Terrace for some time.

Gardaí say they are not releasing the results of the post-mortem for operational reasons. However, all of the resources of a murder inquiry are being deployed by the investigative team.

Emergency services were called to the scene near John’s Green in Kilkenny at about four o’clock on Thursday morning.

Liam Edward O’Sullivan was brought by ambulance to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny where he was treated for a serious head injury. He died on Thursday night.

A woman arrested following the incident was released without charge later that morning.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination of the scene throughout Thursday and Friday.

Gardaí have appealed for informational, particularly from people who were in the Castlecomer Road or Gashouse Lane area between 3.30am and 5.30am on Thursday morning.
