NCT underbody inspections will resume in eight more test centres around the country in the coming week, according to the National Car Testing Service (NCTS).

This follows the delivery and planned installation of new vehicle lifts, the service said.

The inspections were suspended temporarily last week amid concerns about the safety of the vehicle lifts used in the test centres.

Other parts of the NCT process have been continuing as normal, but customers are being asked to return at a later date for the remaining parts of the process, once lifts are back up and running.

The NCTS said the new lifts are being introduced in locations that will maximise the geographical spread and cater for large population centres.

The eight centres are Little Island in Cork, Limerick, Northpoint in Swords Co Dublin, Fonthill in Dublin 22, Galway, Letterkenny, Waterford and Killarney.

Last Friday, the NCTS announced that Deansgrange in south Dublin, Ballinasloe, Athlone, Skibbereen, Ballina and Enniscorthy would also be reintroducing underbody inspections.

However, lifts in these centres are being primarily used for drivers due to undergo a driving test, NCT Taxi roadworthiness tests, NCT retests and for motor trade tests.

NCTS added that the condition survey of all the lifts should be completed towards the end of this week.

"When completed we will, in co-operation with the manufacturer, immediately begin a programme of repairing the remaining lifts within the network over the coming weeks," it said.

"We will provide regular updates as test centres come back into operation."

Further measures to minimise customer inconvenience are also being considered.

The NCTS also reiterated the advice that customers should continue to book and turn up for their NCT as normal.

Motorists whose vehicles only fail due to the inability to have the underneath inspected are being advised to keep a copy of their Vehicle Inspection.

Report with them in order to present it to a member of An Garda Síochána, if required.
