A Fine Gael Minister has said his own local organisation is "livid" following the controversy over the attendance record of former TD Dara Murphy.
Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed made the comments on the RTÉ Your Politics podcast after Dara Murphy resigned last week to take up a new role in the European Commission after he had worked regularly in Brussels while also a Fine Gael TD.
Speaking generally Minister Creed said: "On the issue of standards in politics there is no more critical organisation than the rank and file of Fine Gael membership who get really livid when standards drop. My own organisation is livid over this.
"It really upsets me when people make serious decisions that impact on the public standing of politicians."
Mr Murphy was not available for comment.
Last week, he said that he would cooperate with any relevant statutory procedure that may be initiated following his resignation as a member of the Oireachtas.
Minister Creed said there should be an investigation and added conclusions should then be drawn. He added "let's have the appropriate sanctions if they are deemed necessary".
