A €15 silver commemorative coin has been issued by the Central Bank to mark 70 years since the birth of Phil Lynott.

The musician was born in England but grew up in Dublin.

After fronting several bands, Phil Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in 1970.

The band enjoyed success with songs including 'Whiskey in the Jar', 'The Boys are Back in Town' and 'Jailbreak'.

He was also a successful solo artist with hits including 'Old Town' - the video showing him walking through the streets of Dublin.

Lynott died in 1986 at the age of 36.

The coin was designed by artist Sandra Deiana and depicts Phil Lynott in a characteristic pose with his bass guitar and sound waves coming from it. There is also a graphic representation of a vinyl record.

It was launched by President Michael D Higgins at St Kevin's College in Crumlin - Lynott's former school.

The coin is the second in a three-coin series entitled 'Modern Irish Musicians'.

A coin commemorating Rory Gallagher was launched in September 2018. Next year, a coin commemorating Luke Kelly will be issued.

The Central Bank has issued 3,000 Phil Lynott coins. They will be available to buy from tomorrow for €64.99 each.
