A 25-year-old man has been charged with the false imprisonment and aggravated sexual assault of a teenager in Cavan.

Dean Furlong - with an address at Corlatt, Mullagh, Co Cavan - appeared before Monaghan District Court today in relation to a number of incidents which happened between 17 and 20 October.

The accused did not speak during the brief hearing.

Mr Furlong faces three charges - assault causing serious harm, aggravated sexual assault and false imprisonment of a 19-year-old man at a house in Cavan town.

The court heard there was no application for bail at this time.

An application was made for legal aid and a request that the accused be examined by a psychiatrist when in custody was made.

Gardaí asked that reporting restrictions be put in place preventing the identification of the man as "there is an allegation of sexual assault" involved.

The court also heard there was potentially prejudicial material on social media. Gardaí asked that the court remind people not to share items which may be harmful to any future trial.

Judge Denis McLoughlin remanded Mr Furlong in custody to Castlerea Prison. He is due before Harristown District Court on Friday.

The 19-year-old man injured in the incident remains in hospital.

Two other people arrested as part of the investigation - a man and woman in their 20s - were released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
