The Marine Casualty Investigation Board has confirmed it is investigating an incident involving two vessels off the Kerry coast.

It is believed a French-registered fishing trawler and a large cargo vessel collided not far from the Blasket Islands last Saturday.

The French-registered trawler sustained considerable damage to its bow and some of its crew received medical attention.

Environmental concerns have been raised following the incident.

Campaigners said a more serious collision could have a devastating impact on sensitive sea-life and marine ecosystems off the south and southwest coast.

The region is noted for its rich marine life, including humpback whales.
