A teenager found dead in Newry, Co Down this week was strangled to death, police have said.

Allison Marimon-Herrera, 15, was one of three people discovered dead at the flat.

Detectives said there was a "strong possibility" her mother Giselle Marimon-Herrera, 37, was also strangled.

Officers from the PSNI are carrying out a murder investigation and are not looking for anybody else.

Police believe Ms Marimon-Herrera's 38-year-old partner, who also lived at the address, took his own life.

Ms Marimon-Herrara was originally from Colombia and arrived in Northern Ireland four years ago.

Her daughter was born in Spain, had lived in the North since 2017 and was a pupil at Newry High School.

Police believe they were still alive in the early hours of last Sunday morning, but relatives had not been able to contact them after that time.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy, described the deaths as "an unspeakable tragedy".

The apartment where the bodies were discovered was locked from the inside.

"I believe that Giselle and Allison were still alive in the early hours of Sunday morning but family members have not been able to contact them since," Det Supt Murphy said.

"The exact circumstances of what happened in their home remains the subject of our investigation.

"I would appeal today to anyone who came into direct contact with either Giselle or Allison, or communicated with them via text or social media since Friday, to contact detectives in Newry.

"We are currently supporting the families of those involved as well as Newry High School. I would ask that they are given the time and space to come to terms with these tragic events.

"While our investigation remains at an early stage, there is no evidence at this time that anyone else was involved."
