The mother of Rachel Callaly, who was murdered by her husband Joe O'Reilly in 2004, has said she "hopes to God that he doesn't get out" as he his due before a parole hearing next month.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, Rose Callaly said that O'Reilly has a life, but he did not afford that right to Rachel.

O’Reilly was sentenced to life in prison in 2007 for the murder of Rachel.

Ms Callely added that O’Reilly was not content with taking her daughter's life, but he had also tried to take her character, and she does not believe he should ever get out.

Rachel's badly beaten body was found in the bedroom of her home by her mother on 4 October 2004.

Amid a public appeal for information in the days following the murder, O’Reilly appeared as a guest on the topic of her death on RTÉ's Late Late Show.

Rachel’s father Jim Callaly said O'Reilly was a psychopath and would be a danger to the public if released, adding that he "saw him in action".

Mr Callaly described how O'Reilly had re-enacted the murder in front of them, after he was let back into the family home where Rachel was murdered.

She said she felt it was wrong that they could not address the parole board and said she would love to sit and listen to what O'Reilly has to say at it.

The couple have both written letters to the parole board.

They said they felt it was wrong that O'Reilly was now eligible for parole every two years.

Ms Callaly said that it would bring her solace if O'Reilly admitted to murdering Rachel.

Mr Callaly said it might be no harm if he did confess to the crime and that at least O'Reilly's two children would know the truth.

There was never, Ms Callaly said, a happy ending in a situation like this.
