A referendum that was set to ask the public if they wanted to extend voting rights in Presidential Elections to Irish citizens abroad has been postponed until the autumn.

The referendum was due to be held on 24 May this year which is the same day as the European Parliament and the local authority elections.

It's understood the Government now believes it would not have sufficient time to focus on the referendum given the uncertainty caused by Brexit.

This referendum was recommended by the constitutional convention in 2013.

Back then it overwhelmingly approved a proposal to give Irish people living outside the country the chance to vote in each presidential election.

However, a  referendum to ease the constitutional restrictions on divorce will still be held on 24 May.
