Thousands of houses and businesses were left without power following stormy weather overnight while one of the trees made famous by Game of Thrones has fallen in the high winds.

A yellow wind warning was issued yesterday, ahead of a night of strong gusts. In Co Antrim, one of the 'Dark Hedges' trees fell in the gale-force winds.

The impressive tree-lined avenue provides one of the backdrops for the HBO series and in recent years has become a popular tourist destination for fans of the show.

The beech trees were planted in the 18th century by a local family, the Stuarts, with the intent of creating a grand entrance to their nearby Georgian mansion, Gracehill House.

Much of Game Of Thrones is shot in Northern Ireland, either on location or in studios in Belfast.
