A man has died following an incident at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3.15pm when the man, believed to be an Indian national who was studying at a Dublin university, fell while taking a photograph.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard and the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter were mobilised to the incident.

Rescue 115 arrived at the scene and immediately carried out a search of the area.

Once the man was located, the helicopter winchman was lowered to the water and was able to recover him.

The victim was flown to Doolin where the helicopter crew was met by Irish Coast Guard members and gardaí.

He was formally pronounced dead in Doolin before the body was taken to University Hospital Limerick for formal identification and a post-mortem examination.

Gardaí interviewed a number of eye-witnesses following the incident and have confirmed they are treating the death as a tragic accident.
