Ten people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving on Christmas Day, according to An Garda Síochána.

A further 12 people were arrested between midnight and 9am this morning.

Gardaí say a number of these drivers refused to provide a sample of their breath and now face a four-year driving ban.

Following yesterday's arrests, the Minister for Transport Shane Ross said: "Sadly some drivers continue to take high risks with alcohol over Christmas.

"We will continue to introduce life saving laws to deter reckless drivers from threatening the lives of others. I want to congratulate the gardaí for their energetic efforts to enforce the rules over the holiday period."

A new provision that means drink-drivers receive an automatic ban came into effect earlier this year.

Under those provision, drivers with a breathalyser reading of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath will be disqualified from holding a driving licence for a period of three months and receive a fine of €200.

Drivers withbetween 50 milligrammes and 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood or 107 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine will face the same sanctions.

Last month both the RSA and gardaí warned motorists of the affects alcohol can have the morning after a night of drinking.
