The death has been announced of the artist Seán McSweeney, who was regarded as Ireland's leading landscape painter. He was 82.

Mr McSweeney grew up off Dorset Street, Dublin, but moved to north Sligo in the 1980s.

The bogland and shoreline near his home in Co Sligo became the focus of his paintings, which one critic described as "a profoundly human landscape - a place inhabited, worked and known intimately".

Another critic described Mr McSweeney as "a careful, thinking artist as well as a passionately lyrical one".

He was a member of Aosdána.
