A 'paddle steamer' boat that was being towed from the Wales to Northern Ireland sank in the Irish Sea yesterday afternoon.

A paddle steamer is a type of riverboat that uses paddle wheels to propel the craft through the water.

The UK Coast Guard responded to reports that the 36-metre vessel was taking on water at around 2.20pm, according to the RNLI.

The Holyhead lifeboat, the Christopher Pearce, attended the scene.

The troubled boat did not have anyone on board or any fuel and it sank completely within two hours.

Holyhead coxswain Tony Price said: "It was very sad to see such a lovely vessel sink like that, but fortunately no one was endangered and the lack of fuel on board meant there were no environmental issues."
