Tributes have been paid to the former Bishop of Elphin Christopher Jones, who has died at the age of 82.

His successor in the northwestern diocese, Bishop Kevin Doran, said the death of "Bishop Christy is like the loss of a grandparent".

A native of Rathcroghan, Co Roscommon, Christopher Jones was born on 3 March 1936.

He was ordained to the priesthood on 21 June 1962 and spent the first three years of his priesthood at St Muredach's College in Ballina.

He spent the remainder of his ministry in Co Sligo, becoming Bishop of Elphin on 15 August 1994.

He served in that role for 20 years before retiring in 2014.

After his retirement Bishop Jones continued to live in Sligo until his death at his home yesterday.

Archbishop Eamon Martin has also paid tribute to Bishop Jones, saying he was "very committed throughout his lifetime to person-centred social services".
