Minister for Education Richard Bruton has said there was a duty of school principals and boards of management to be fair and balanced in programmes being run at schools.

He was responding to a row at a school in Tralee, Co Kerry, over a talk given to Leaving Certificate students by anti-abortion group Lifeworks Education.

A number of students at Mounthawk Secondary School stayed at home on Wednesday in protest at the one-sided nature of the talk.

Mr Bruton said the department does not issue guidelines on matters of this nature but he said there was a duty of school principals and boards of management to be fair and balanced in programmes being run at schools.

He said that a lot has changed since the introduction of the Relationships and Sexuality Education programme in the early 1990s.

Mr Bruton said a review was under way to ensure these programmes were fit for purpose.

He was attending a conference of the Joint Managerial Body/Association of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools.
