Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has claimed that some local authorities have incorrectly counted some people as homeless.

The mis-categorisation was discovered during an investigation into homeless figures, ordered by Mr Murphy earlier this year.

The minister estimates the figures were overstated by between 600 and 900.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Murphy said he cannot give a hard deadline on when families will be out of emergency accommodation because each family has specific needs.

However, he added that the family hub programme has been extended and a huge amount of work is being done to look after families in emergency accommodation.

Figures released yesterday showed a slight drop in the number of adults and families in emergency accommodation.

The figures for March show there are 126 fewer people in emergency accommodation around the country, including 17 adults, 19 families and 109 children.

The total number of homeless people is recorded as 9,681, which is down from 9,807 in February.
