Two Irish overseas charities have confirmed they have dismissed staff members in recent years following allegations of sexual misconduct.

They were responding to queries following a scandal at the British charity Oxfam over its handling of sexual misconduct allegations.

Both Concern and GOAL have issued statements saying they have received an average of between one and two allegations a year.

Concern said three quarters of the complaints against its staff over the last ten years were upheld and staff members dismissed.

Concern employs 3,900 people around the world and says the dismissals show how seriously it is taking such allegations. It says it operates a complaints response mechanism and staff must sign up to a code of conduct.

It is understood that GOAL has dismissed five staff members since 2010.

It employs almost 2,000 people in 13 countries and says it established an Investigations Unit in 2016 headed by a former senior garda officer to ensure robust reporting and investigation of all complaints against staff.
