The level of hospital overcrowding has reduced today, according to figures from both the Health Service Executive and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The INMO says there are 507 patients waiting on trolleys, or on wards today, for admission to a bed.

The hospitals worst affected are Cork University Hospital with 48 waiting, the Mater in Dublin with 39 and Galway University Hospital with 34 patients waiting.

On Tuesday, it reported 668 patients waiting, the second highest figure recorded.

The HSE figures today for the number of patients on trolleys in emergency departments is 399.
