Dublin City Council officials say new accommodation will be found for 14 families who have to leave the Gresham Hotel.

Deputy chief executive Brendan Kenny said he is "very confident" that places will be found before the end of January.

The Gresham, one of Dublin's best known hotels, has recently been used as emergency accommodation.

However, it said that refurbishment works will mean a number of rooms will be lost for a number of months, which will reduce capacity.

It said in order to facilitate the work, it had to turn away a number of business opportunities, including Dublin City Council.

Mr Kenny was speaking at the release of the monthly housing report this evening.

In the report, the council says it has provided more than twice its target for homes for those on the housing list.

It says that from 2015 to 2017 there were 8,285 homes provided compared to a target of 3,347.

However, nearly half were assisted rental under the HAP scheme, while the remainder were homes constructed or purchased, rapid build, restored voids and units provided under Part V regulation for new developments.

Councillors also condemned the reappointment of Conor Skehan as head of the Housing Agency following his comments that some homeless families were "gaming the system".

The Sinn Féin motion stated: "We believe his recent comments on homelessness and the downplaying of the housing crisis make him wholly unsuitable for the job."

Cllr Daithí Doolan said the remarks were part of a "culture of victim blaming". He said the problem of homelessness was because of a lack of house building.

However, Independent Cllr Ruairí McGinley said families had to wait 15 years on a housing list, but only two years on a homeless list and that "desperate people make desperate decisions".

The Sinn Féin motion was carried by 28 in favour with 20 against and four abstentions.
