A 40-year-old man has died after he was stabbed in Ballyjamesduff in Co Cavan last night.
He has been named locally as Marek Swider who was originally from Poland but had been living in Cavan for more than ten years.
The incident happened at Dublin Street in the town at 11pm.
Mr Swider was treated for serious stab wounds at Cavan General Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after 9.30am.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Bailieboro Garda Station on 042-9694570.
They want to talk to anyone who was driving on the Dublin road in Ballyjamesduff between 10.30pm and midnight and who may have dashcam footage of the area.
They also want to speak to members of the Polish community or anyone who may have any information to contact them at Bailieboro, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
Gardai have been in contact with Mr Swider's family in Poland.
The scene of the incident was sealed off for a technical examination.
It is understood that a dispute over a card game may have led to Mr Swider's death.
A post-mortem examination has been carried out on his body, but gardaí say the results are not being released for operational reasons.
