New guidelines have been launched to make the workplace more inclusive for trans and gender variant people.

It comes as a survey of transgender people found that 25% of those actively looking for work are unemployed.

It also found that 44% believed they had to stay in the closet about their gender identity to avoid transphobic discrimination. 

30% also reported that they were verbally harassed at work because of being trans.

New guidelines were launched today on the subject for employers and employees.

The CEO of Transgender Equality Network Ireland Stephen O'Hare said that respecting a person's preferences and their privacy are key issue that come out of these guidelines

He said it is really up to the individual as to what information they choose to share.
