The Seanad has heard that inspections of high-rise buildings in Ireland following the Grenfell Tower fire in London have been drive-by fire inspections.

Labour Senator Kevin Humphries said he had information indicating that no fire authority entered the buildings where cladding was assessed.

He said drive-by inspections were not appropriate and that there was a responsibility to ensure residents know that responses are up to standard internally.

"Until remedial work is carried out they're at risk", he said.

A dedicated taskforce was established by Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy following the Grenfell fire during the summer, to investigate any potential fire risk posed by cladding on buildings more than 18 metres high, and on multi-unit housing schemes of six storeys or more.
