Heightened security measures are in place for this year's Electric Picnic festival, which gets under way today.

Duran Duran and The xx are among the big names headlining the weekend event in Stradbally, Co Laois.

Gardaí say they have a comprehensive policing and security plan in place for the biggest music event of the year.

Around 55,000 people are expected to attend the festival, with crowds arriving at the Cosby Hall venue since early this morning.

Those travelling to the event are advised to turn off their Sat Navs as local traffic plans are in place.

People driving via the M7 will exit at Portlaoise and follow local directions, while those travelling on the M8 from the south will exit at junction 3 and travel to Stradbally via Abbeyleix.

The festival is expected to get off to a bright, dry start but rain is forecast tomorrow and on Sunday.

A status yellow rainfall warning is in place for much of the country over the weekend, but does not cover Co Laois.
