The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland says it has been approached by a number of broadcasting companies who use the UK as a location to broadcast to the rest of Europe about the possibility of being licensed in Ireland after Brexit.

BAI Chief Executive Michael O'Keeffe told a Dáil committee on communications the companies are concerned that if and when the UK leaves the EU, they will not have the right to be carried in EU countries and they are now looking at other jurisdictions.

The BAI, he said, is looking to see if this will bring any great benefit from a financial point of view as it is possible the companies might base the majority of their workforce in the UK but have an EU licence in Ireland.

He said the BAI is weighing up issues, as it might cause a bureaucratic headache for processing licences, but said in general terms if companies want to locate in this jurisdiction that should be welcomed.
